Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define gender identity.
Model answer
Gender identity is the socially constructed sense of oneself as masculine or feminine, expressed through dress, appearance, speech, leisure and emotional expression, and distinct from biological sex.
- 2
What does Connell mean by hegemonic masculinity and emphasised femininity?
Model answer
Hegemonic masculinity is the dominant, culturally idealised form of manhood — toughness, heterosexuality and breadwinning — against which other masculinities are measured, while emphasised femininity is the form of womanhood organised around accommodating men's interests.
- 3
What is the crisis of masculinity?
Model answer
Writers such as Mac an Ghaill argue that the decline of manual industry removed the traditional male breadwinner role, leaving some men uncertain about how to be masculine and searching for alternative sources of identity.
- 4
Define social class identity.
Model answer
Class identity is a sense of self based on economic position, expressed through taste, accent, education, leisure, consumption and who a person feels comfortable among.
- 5
How does Bourdieu explain the persistence of class identity?
Model answer
He argues that a class upbringing produces a habitus of tastes and dispositions, and that the cultural capital of the privileged is rewarded by institutions such as schools, so class identity is embodied and passed on across generations.
- 6
What did Savage's Great British Class Survey conclude about class in Britain?
Model answer
It concluded that the traditional three-class model is outdated and identified seven classes, ranging from an elite to a precariat, distinguished by economic, social and cultural capital rather than occupation alone.
