Direct and indirect media effects models
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Recall questions on direct-effects theories, the hypodermic syringe model and Bandura's Bobo doll experiment, desensitisation and catharsis, indirect effects and Katz and Lazarsfeld's two-step flow model, the neo-Marxist cultural effects model, Hall's three readings of a media text, and Gerbner's cultivation theory and mean world syndrome.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What three kinds of reading did Hall say an audience can make of a media text?
What is meant by cultivation theory and the mean world syndrome?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a direct-effects theory of the media?
Model answer
It is any approach holding that media messages pass straight into a passive audience and produce an immediate, more or less identical change in behaviour or attitude.
- 2
Explain the hypodermic syringe model.
Model answer
It claims media content is injected into a passive, undifferentiated audience like a drug, so that everyone receives the same message and responds to it in the same way.
- 3
Which experiment is most often cited in support of the hypodermic syringe model, and what did it show?
Model answer
Bandura's Bobo doll experiment, in which children who had watched an adult attack a doll went on to imitate that aggression, is used to argue that screen violence is copied.
- 4
Define desensitisation as a media effect.
Model answer
It is the claim that repeated exposure to violent content blunts the audience's emotional response, so that real violence comes to seem less shocking and more acceptable.
- 5
What is catharsis, and why does it undermine the direct-effects argument?
Model answer
Catharsis is the idea that watching violence allows aggressive feelings to be released harmlessly, which suggests media violence could reduce real aggression rather than cause it.
- 6
Give two criticisms of the hypodermic syringe model.
Model answer
It treats audiences as identical passive dupes with no critical judgement, and its laboratory evidence of short-term imitation cannot be generalised to everyday viewing where family, peers and context intervene.
