Youth Subcultures
Class, ethnic and hybrid subcultures and consensus versus conflict
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Recall questions on middle-class counter-cultures and working-class subcultures, youth subcultures built on minority ethnic identity including Rastafarianism and Pryce's Bristol research, hybridity with Back's South London study, Nayak's white wannabes and code-switching, and consensus, conflict and postmodern positions on youth subcultures.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give an example of a youth subculture built around minority ethnic identity, and say what it offered members.
Which perspectives treat youth subcultures through consensus, and which through conflict?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does a middle-class counter-culture such as the hippies differ from a working-class subculture such as the skinheads?
Model answer
Counter-cultures were more openly political and involved dropping out of careers their members could have had, while working-class subcultures were shorter-lived, rooted in a particular neighbourhood and expressed through style rather than stated politics.
- 2
Give an example of a youth subculture built around minority ethnic identity, and say what it offered members.
Model answer
Rastafarianism among African-Caribbean youth in Britain offered a positive black identity, a shared style of dress, language and music, and a framework for criticising the racism its members met in school, work and policing.
- 3
What does Pryce's Bristol research show about African-Caribbean young people's responses to life in Britain?
Model answer
That there was no single response: he found a spread of lifestyles from religious and law-abiding to hustlers who rejected low-paid, insecure work, so ethnicity alone does not determine which subculture someone joins.
- 4
Define hybridity in relation to youth subcultures.
Model answer
Hybridity is the blending of elements drawn from two or more cultures into a new cultural form or identity, such as young British Asians fusing bhangra with Western dance and club music.
- 5
What did Back find about young people's identities in multi-ethnic South London?
Model answer
That they built new hybrid identities by borrowing from one another's cultures, adopting cultural masks they could move between depending on who they were with.
- 6
What does Nayak's idea of white wannabes describe?
Model answer
White working-class young men adopting the dress, music and speech associated with black youth culture, which shows that cultural borrowing runs in more than one direction.
