Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is feedback in sport?

    Model answer

Feedback is information a performer receives about a performance, during or after it. Feedback helps the performer correct errors and improve.

  2. 2

    What is positive feedback?

    Model answer

Positive feedback tells the performer what they did well, often with praise. A coach praising the follow-through on a basketball shot gives positive feedback.

  3. 3

Why is positive feedback suited to beginners?

    Model answer

Positive feedback motivates beginners and builds their confidence. Beginners make many errors, so praise for what went well keeps them trying.

  4. 4

    What is negative feedback?

    Model answer

Negative feedback tells the performer what was wrong with a performance and how to correct it. A coach pointing out that a sprinter stood up too early gives negative feedback.

  5. 5

Why is negative feedback more suited to elite performers than to beginners?

    Model answer

Elite performers can use criticism to refine details of technique without losing motivation. Too much negative feedback can demotivate a beginner.

  6. 6

    What is knowledge of results?

    Model answer

Knowledge of results is feedback about the outcome of a performance. Examples include the score, a finishing time or whether a penalty went in.
