What Energy Resource Management covers
Energy Resource Management is examined in Paper 2, The Human Environment. It covers renewable and non-renewable energy resources compared, the UK’s energy mix and why energy mixes vary, rising energy demand and the development of non-renewables, developing renewables, and fracking, stakeholder attitudes to energy and sustainable management of energy resources.

- Renewable and non-renewable energy resources comparedRenewable energy resource, three renewable resources widely used to make electricity and one benefit and one drawback of generating electricity from uranium.Open →
- The UK’s energy mix and why energy mixes varyWhat an energy mix is, the shares of gas, coal, wind and nuclear in UK generation, why the UK imports energy, and how population, wealth, physical resources and poverty shape what a country burns.Open →
- Rising energy demand and the development of non-renewablesThe rise in world energy consumption from population, wealth, technology and emerging economies, how coal, offshore oil, natural gas and uranium are extracted and moved and the environmental and local costs of each, and how graphs of projected population compare with likely energy supply.Open →
- Developing renewables, and frackingHow hydro-electric schemes, wind turbines and photovoltaic panels generate electricity and what each costs the environment, then what fracking is, the shale it targets, and the objections raised against it.Open →
- Stakeholder attitudes to energyWhat a stakeholder is, why residents, energy companies, governments, campaign groups and consumers take different views of a new scheme, and why national and local opinions on the same project conflict.Open →
- Sustainable management of energy resourcesWhat sustainable energy use means, why finite fuels and renewables both need managing, conservation and household savings, government measures and international agreements, how the task differs between wealthy and developing countries, and how carbon and ecological footprints are defined, calculated and compared.Open →
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why did cars matter for oil, how is surface coal extracted, and what harm does opencast mining cause?
How do hydro-electric, wind and solar schemes generate electricity, and what does a large dam cost the environment?
What is meant by a renewable energy resource?
What is meant by a non-renewable energy resource?
What is a country's energy mix?
Which fossil fuel now supplies the largest share of electricity generated in the UK?
How does a hydro-electric scheme generate electricity?
What is a stakeholder in an energy development?
What does an energy company want most from a new project?
Why do finite fuels have to be managed carefully?
Why do renewables still need managing even though the source never runs out?
Which four resources are the main non-renewable sources of energy?
Which renewable source has grown fastest in the UK in recent years?
How has the growth in world population pushed energy use upwards?
Give two environmental costs of building a large dam.
Why may a government in a poorer country still choose coal or oil despite the pollution?
What measures do governments use to encourage cleaner and more efficient energy use?

Commonly confused
Pairs that lose marks when they are blurred together.
Renewable energy resource vs Non-renewable energy resource
Renewable energy resource: one naturally replenished as fast as it is used, so supply never runs down. Non-renewable energy resource: a fixed stock consumed far faster than it forms, so gradually used up.
Opencast mining vs Fracking
Opencast mining: stripping off the soil and rock above a seam so coal can be dug out. Fracking: pumping water, sand and chemicals into shale at high pressure to release gas.
Hydro-electric power vs Wind power
Hydro-electric power: electricity from reservoir water released through turbines below a dam. Wind power: electricity from moving air turning blades that drive a generator.
Questions from this topic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by a renewable energy resource?
Model answer
One that is naturally replenished as fast as it is used, so the supply does not run down.
- 2
What is meant by a non-renewable energy resource?
Model answer
One that exists as a fixed stock and is consumed far faster than it forms, so it is gradually used up.
- 3
Which four resources are the main non-renewable sources of energy?
Model answer
Coal, oil, natural gas and uranium.
- 4
Name three renewable resources widely used to make electricity.
Model answer
Hydro-electric power, wind power and solar power.
- 5
Why are coal, oil and gas grouped together as fossil fuels?
Model answer
They all formed from the buried remains of plants and animals over millions of years.
- 6
Give two advantages of developing coal for electricity generation.
Model answer
It is cheap to burn and gives a constant, reliable output, and the mining and burning technology is long established.
