Human activity and development in glaciated uplands
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1 section A
Overview
How grazing, conifer plantations and felling alter soil, runoff and slope stability, why settlements sit on valley floors, reservoirs, hydroelectric power and wind farms, and the benefits and damage of tourism and conservation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does planting a conifer plantation change the movement of water through an upland?
What happens to slope stability when a plantation is felled?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does sheep grazing on upland slopes affect the soil?
Model answer
The animals crop the vegetation short and their hooves compact and break the surface, leaving bare soil that rain washes away easily.
- 2
Explain why the loss of vegetation to grazing increases surface runoff.
Model answer
With fewer leaves to intercept rain and fewer roots to open up the soil, less water soaks in and more of it flows straight over the surface.
- 3
How does planting a conifer plantation change the movement of water through an upland?
Model answer
The trees intercept rainfall and draw water out of the soil, reducing runoff, although the deep ploughing lines and drains cut for planting can channel water quickly to streams.
- 4
What happens to slope stability when a plantation is felled?
Model answer
The roots that bound the soil together die and heavy machinery loosens the ground, so soil erosion and mass movement both increase.
- 5
Why are settlements and roads in a glaciated upland usually found on the valley floor?
Model answer
The floor of a glacial trough is flat and sheltered and so is far easier to build on than the steep, unstable valley sides.
- 6
How does building a settlement in an upland valley alter the way rainfall behaves?
Model answer
Roofs, roads and car parks are impermeable, so water cannot infiltrate and instead runs off rapidly into drains and streams.
