Water Resource Management
Sustainable management of water resources
- 3 things to know
- Paper 2 section C
Overview
Sustainable water management, population pressure, over-pumping groundwater and over-abstracting rivers, the differing views of individuals, organisations and governments, top-down and bottom-up schemes, metering and leak repair, greywater recycling, transfers, rainwater harvesting and appropriate technology.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
For each of the two contrasting countries you have studied, what should you be able to explain about its water management?
Why does a growing world population make sustainable water management urgent?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by managing water sustainably?
Model answer
It means using water in a way that meets people's needs now without running down supplies or damaging ecosystems for future generations.
- 2
Why does a growing world population make sustainable water management urgent?
Model answer
The volume of fresh water on Earth is fixed, so a rising population with rising living standards presses harder on the same limited stores each year.
- 3
What happens when groundwater is pumped out faster than rain replaces it?
Model answer
The water table falls until wells and springs dry up, and near the coast seawater can seep in and make the aquifer salty. Deep aquifers filled thousands of years ago are barely recharged at all, so the water taken from them is effectively gone.
- 4
What damage can taking too much water from a river do to the environment?
Model answer
Flows drop so wetlands dry out and habitats are lost, and pollutants become more concentrated in the little water that is left.
- 5
How do the views of individuals on water conservation differ from one another?
Model answer
Some willingly cut their use and welcome metering, while others see cheap, unlimited water as a right and resent restrictions such as hosepipe bans.
- 6
How can the views of different organisations on sustainable water use conflict?
Model answer
A charity may press for cheap local supplies for the poorest, a water company for higher charges to fund investment, and farming businesses for the irrigation water their crops depend on.
