How exploitation changes environments
- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
What biodiversity is and how forest clearance and overfishing reduce it, soil erosion from lost vegetation, ploughing and overgrazing, and how farming, mining and burning fossil fuels lower water and air quality.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is biodiversity?
Why does clearing forest reduce biodiversity?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is biodiversity?
Model answer
The variety of different plant and animal species living in an ecosystem.
- 2
Why does clearing forest reduce biodiversity?
Model answer
Habitats are destroyed, so species lose their food and shelter and their numbers fall or they disappear from the area.
- 3
How can taking too many fish reduce the biodiversity of a marine ecosystem?
Model answer
Removing one species in huge numbers breaks the food web, so the predators that feed on it decline as well.
- 4
What is soil erosion?
Model answer
The stripping away of the topsoil layer by running water or by wind.
- 5
Why does removing vegetation make soil erosion more likely?
Model answer
Roots no longer bind the particles together and the leaf cover no longer shields the surface, so rain and wind carry the loose topsoil away.
- 6
How do ploughing and overgrazing damage the soil?
Model answer
They break up the surface and strip off the plant cover, leaving bare soil that is easily washed or blown off the field.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Resource Management, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
