Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a stakeholder conflict?

    Model answer

A stakeholder conflict arises when a decision that satisfies one group's objectives works against another's, so the business cannot fully satisfy both.

  2. 2

Explain the conflict between shareholders and employees over pay.

    Model answer

Wages are a cost, so higher pay reduces the profit available for dividends and reinvestment, while holding pay down protects returns at the expense of staff living standards and goodwill.

  3. 3

How does a decision to move production overseas affect different stakeholder groups?

    Model answer

Shareholders gain from lower costs and higher profit and customers may gain lower prices, but the employees who lose their jobs and the local community that loses the spending and the site are worse off.

  4. 4

How can a supermarket's drive for low prices create conflict with its suppliers?

    Model answer

Customers gain cheaper food and the retailer protects its margin, but suppliers face squeezed prices and longer payment terms that can leave their own businesses unprofitable.

  5. 5

Give an example of a conflict between a business's growth and the local community.

    Model answer

Building a new distribution centre creates jobs and business rates, but the extra traffic, noise and loss of open space are borne by the residents living nearby.

  6. 6

Explain the conflict between short-term profit and long-term investment.

    Model answer

Shareholders wanting immediate dividends favour cutting spending, while managers, employees and long-term investors want money put into equipment, training and research that will only pay off in later years.
