How does effective procurement improve profitability?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define logistics.
Model answer
Logistics is the management of the movement and storage of materials and finished goods, from the supplier through production and on to the customer.
- 2
Define procurement.
Model answer
Procurement is the process of finding suppliers, negotiating terms and buying in the goods and services a business needs.
- 3
How does effective procurement improve profitability?
Model answer
Bought-in materials are often the largest single cost, so a lower purchase price raises added value on every unit sold without any change to the product.
- 4
A business buys 40,000 components a year and negotiates the price down from £6.40 to £5.90. Calculate the annual saving.
Model answer
The saving is £6.40 − £5.90 = £0.50 per component, so the annual saving is 40,000 × £0.50 = £20,000.
- 5
What is meant by the length of a supply chain?
Model answer
It is the number of separate stages and intermediaries between the original raw material and the final customer.
- 6
Give two advantages of a short supply chain.
Model answer
Goods reach the customer more quickly and there are fewer points at which cost, delay or quality problems can be introduced.
