Why is choosing too large a scale dangerous?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by a business's scale of operations?
Model answer
The scale of operations is the maximum output a business is set up to produce, determined by the capacity of its premises, equipment, workforce and systems.
- 2
How does the nature of the product influence the scale a business operates at?
Model answer
A standardised product bought by millions can be made in huge volumes on one site, while a bespoke or perishable product must be produced in small batches close to the customer.
- 3
How does the cost structure of an industry affect the scale a firm must reach?
Model answer
Where the fixed cost of plant, research or a network is very large, only high volume brings the unit cost down far enough to compete, so small operators cannot survive.
- 4
Give an example of an industry where large scale is essential, and explain why.
Model answer
Car manufacturing needs large scale because the tooling and assembly plant cost hundreds of millions, and only very high output spreads that fixed cost thinly enough to price the car competitively.
- 5
How can customer expectations limit the scale of an operation?
Model answer
Where customers expect a personal, tailored or locally sourced service, expanding the scale erodes the very thing they are paying for, so growth beyond a point loses more custom than it wins.
- 6
How do suppliers influence the scale at which a business can operate?
Model answer
A business can only produce as much as its suppliers can reliably deliver, so a limited supply of a material, component or skill caps the scale, while suppliers able to grow with the firm allow it to expand.
