Critical path analysis and the critical path
- 1 thing to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on critical path analysis and networks, calculating earliest start and latest finish times, identifying the critical path and minimum project duration, the effect of overruns, and the benefits and limitations of the method.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is critical path analysis?
Model answer
Critical path analysis is a technique that maps the activities in a project, their durations and their dependencies in order to find the shortest time in which it can be completed.
- 2
What does a network in critical path analysis show?
Model answer
It shows every activity in the project, how long each one takes, and which activities must be finished before others can begin.
- 3
What is an earliest start time?
Model answer
An earliest start time is the soonest an activity can begin, given the time taken by all the activities that must be completed before it.
- 4
What is a latest finish time?
Model answer
A latest finish time is the latest an activity can be completed without delaying the whole project.
- 5
How are earliest start times found?
Model answer
Work forwards through the network from the start, adding each activity's duration to the earliest start time of the activity that precedes it.
- 6
How are latest finish times found?
Model answer
Work backwards from the end of the project, subtracting each activity's duration from the latest finish time of the activity that follows it.
