Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a cash flow forecast?
Model answer
It is an estimate, month by month, of the cash a business expects to receive and pay out and of the balance it will hold at the end of each month.
- 2
Distinguish a cash flow forecast from an income statement.
Model answer
A cash flow forecast looks forward at when money will actually move, while an income statement looks back at the revenue earned and costs incurred in a period, whether or not they were paid.
- 3
How does forecasting cash flow help a business spot trouble early?
Model answer
It shows a shortfall in a future month while there is still time to arrange finance or delay spending, rather than at the point where a payment fails.
- 4
Why does a bank normally ask for a cash flow forecast with a loan application?
Model answer
It shows when the business will have the cash to make repayments, so the bank can judge whether the loan can be serviced.
- 5
How is a cash flow forecast used to monitor performance during the year?
Model answer
Actual receipts and payments are compared with the forecast each month, so managers can see whether the business is running ahead of or behind plan.
- 6
How does a cash flow forecast provide targets?
Model answer
The forecast receipts become collection targets for the sales ledger and the forecast payments a spending limit, so departments know what they are working to.
