Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define capacity utilisation.
Model answer
Capacity utilisation is the proportion of its maximum possible output that a business is actually producing, expressed as a percentage.
- 2
State the formula for capacity utilisation.
Model answer
Capacity utilisation = actual output ÷ maximum possible output × 100.
- 3
A factory can make 5,000 units a month and is producing 3,600. What is its capacity utilisation?
Model answer
Capacity utilisation is 3,600 ÷ 5,000 × 100 = 72%.
- 4
A 120-room hotel sells 2,880 room-nights during a 30-day month. Calculate its capacity utilisation.
Model answer
Maximum capacity is 120 × 30 = 3,600 room-nights, so utilisation is 2,880 ÷ 3,600 × 100 = 80%.
- 5
A business working at 85% capacity utilisation produces 10,200 units. Calculate its maximum capacity.
Model answer
Maximum capacity is 10,200 ÷ 0.85 = 12,000 units.
- 6
A plant with a maximum output of 800 units a day is running at 65% utilisation. Calculate its actual daily output.
Model answer
Actual output is 800 × 0.65 = 520 units a day.
