- 2 things to know
- Component 02
Overview
Recall questions on contribution per unit and total contribution, calculating profit and break-even output, how changes in fixed costs, variable costs and price move the break-even point, and output needed for a target profit.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the formula for total contribution.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define contribution per unit.
Model answer
Contribution per unit is the selling price of one unit minus the variable cost of making that unit.
- 2
State the formula for total contribution.
Model answer
Total contribution = contribution per unit × number of units sold.
- 3
Why are fixed costs left out when contribution is calculated?
Model answer
Fixed costs do not change with the number of units made, so contribution measures what each extra unit adds towards covering them.
- 4
How is profit worked out once total contribution is known?
Model answer
Profit = total contribution - fixed costs.
- 5
What does it mean for a business to break even?
Model answer
It is selling exactly enough units for total revenue to equal total costs, so it makes neither a profit nor a loss.
- 6
State the formula for break-even output.
Model answer
Break-even output = fixed costs divided by contribution per unit.
