Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the term stakeholder.
Model answer
A stakeholder is any individual or group with an interest in a business's activities, who either affects the business or is affected by what it does.
- 2
Distinguish between an internal and an external stakeholder.
Model answer
Internal stakeholders such as employees, managers and owners are part of the organisation itself, while external stakeholders such as customers, suppliers, lenders and the local community deal with it from outside.
- 3
Name six stakeholder groups of a supermarket chain.
Model answer
Six groups are its shareholders, its employees, its customers, its suppliers, its lenders and the local communities around its stores.
- 4
Why are shareholders more than simply one stakeholder group among many?
Model answer
Shareholders own part of the company and carry the residual risk, so they hold legal rights over its profits and over the appointment of directors that no other stakeholder has.
- 5
In what sense are managers and directors a distinct stakeholder group from other employees?
Model answer
They are employees, but their pay, bonuses and reputation are tied to the firm's performance and they hold the decision-making power, so their interests can diverge from both staff and shareholders.
- 6
Why is a lender a stakeholder in a business it does not own?
Model answer
The lender's money is at stake, so it has a direct interest in the firm's ability to pay interest and repay the capital, and it usually imposes conditions on how the business is run.
