Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define productivity.

    Model answer

Productivity is a measure of output per unit of input, most often output per worker or per hour worked.

  2. 2

Define efficiency in an operations context.

    Model answer

Efficiency is producing a given output using the smallest possible quantity of inputs, so that waste and cost per unit are as low as possible.

  3. 3

    What is meant by effectiveness?

    Model answer

Effectiveness is how well the operation achieves what it set out to achieve, such as meeting the specification, the deadline or the customer's requirement.

  4. 4

What is the difference between being efficient and being effective?

    Model answer

An efficient operation uses few resources while an effective one delivers the right result, so a factory can make products very cheaply and still be ineffective if they are not what the customer ordered.

  5. 5

A workshop makes 500 units a day at the lowest cost in its industry, but a third of them are the wrong specification. Is it efficient, effective, or neither?

    Model answer

It appears efficient in its use of resources but it is not effective, because a third of its output does not do the job it was made for.

  6. 6

How does improving efficiency raise productivity?

    Model answer

Less input is consumed making each unit, so the same workers and machines turn out more usable output in the same time.
