Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by conglomerate ownership of news media?
Model answer
Conglomerate ownership means a news outlet is one part of a much larger company with interests in other industries or other media, so decisions about it are taken in the interests of the whole group.
- 2
Define vertical integration.
Model answer
Vertical integration is the ownership by one company of successive stages of the same industry, such as producing content, distributing it and controlling the platform on which it is consumed.
- 3
Explain why concentration of media ownership is regarded as a problem for democracy.
Model answer
If a small number of owners control most of what a population reads and watches, the range of viewpoints in public debate narrows and those owners acquire political influence that nobody elected.
- 4
Give one argument in favour of large media groups.
Model answer
Scale provides the money for expensive investigative reporting, foreign bureaux and legal defence that a small independent title could never fund.
- 5
What is a public service broadcaster?
Model answer
A public service broadcaster is one required by law or charter to serve the whole public with news, information and programming that meets defined obligations, rather than to maximise profit.
- 6
Explain how a trust-owned newspaper differs from a shareholder-owned one.
Model answer
A trust exists to sustain the paper and its independence rather than to distribute profit, so any surplus is reinvested and there is no shareholder pressure for a return.
