What you need to know

Define a niche audience.
How do social and cultural circumstances shape audience interpretation?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does the television industry group audiences by demographic?
Model answer
The industry sorts viewers by measurable characteristics such as age, gender, social class, region and household composition, so that a programme's audience can be described to advertisers and to schedulers.
- 2
What are the NRS social grades?
Model answer
They are a classification of households by the occupation of the chief income earner into the six grades A, B, C1, C2, D and E, running from higher managerial and professional down to those dependent on state benefit.
- 3
What is psychographic profiling and why is it more useful than demographics alone?
Model answer
Psychographic profiling groups people by lifestyle, values, attitudes and taste rather than by age or income, which predicts far better what somebody will actually choose to watch.
- 4
Define a niche audience.
Model answer
A niche audience is a small and specific group united by a shared interest or taste, targeted by a product that makes no attempt to reach a mass audience.
- 5
Why are niche audiences commercially valuable despite their size?
Model answer
A clearly defined niche can be sold to advertisers who want exactly those viewers, and it is often loyal enough to pay directly through subscription, which is worth more per head than an occasional mass viewer.
- 6
What is a fan audience and what distinguishes it from a general audience?
Model answer
A fan audience engages intensively and repeatedly with a product, seeking out extra material, discussing it with others and producing content of its own, rather than simply watching and moving on.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
