Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which publisher operates Wales Online?
Model answer
Wales Online is operated by Media Wales, part of Reach plc.
- 2
Which printed titles is Wales Online associated with?
Model answer
Wales Online is the online home of the Western Mail, the South Wales Echo and Wales on Sunday.
- 3
Explain what is meant by a national news service for Wales.
Model answer
A national news service for Wales treats Wales as the nation whose politics, institutions and communities are the main subject, rather than as a region inside a British story.
- 4
Why does devolved government in Wales matter for news provision?
Model answer
Health, education and much domestic policy are decided by the Senedd, so decisions affecting daily life in Wales are not covered by London-based reporting of United Kingdom government policy.
- 5
What is meant by the democratic deficit in Welsh news?
Model answer
The democratic deficit is the concern that many people in Wales consume mainly London-based media and therefore receive very little coverage of the devolved decisions that actually govern them.
- 6
Give one way a regional news website builds a relationship with its audience.
Model answer
A regional site covers local courts, councils, schools, roads and sport that no national outlet will report, so readers use it for information available nowhere else.
