Zener diode
- 3 things to know
- Paper 3, section B
Overview
The characteristic in forward and reverse bias, breakdown voltage, and voltage regulation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are the anode and cathode of a Zener diode, and how is the cathode marked?
What happens to the voltage across a Zener diode as the reverse current through it increases beyond the breakdown point?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the characteristic curve of a Zener diode in both forward and reverse bias regions.
Model answer
In forward bias, it shows normal diode behaviour (conducting above threshold voltage). In reverse bias, it shows a sharp breakdown at a specific reverse voltage called the Zener breakdown voltage.
- 2
What is the Zener breakdown voltage?
Model answer
The reverse voltage at which the Zener diode begins to conduct significantly in the reverse direction.
- 3
In which direction does significant current flow through a Zener diode when it is operating at its breakdown voltage?
Model answer
In the reverse direction.
- 4
Why does a Zener diode require a minimum operating current?
Model answer
To maintain stable operation at the breakdown voltage.
- 5
What is the anode of a Zener diode?
Model answer
The terminal connected to the p-type semiconductor material.
- 6
What is the cathode of a Zener diode?
Model answer
The terminal connected to the n-type semiconductor material, typically marked with a band on the component.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Electronics, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
