- 1 thing to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on positive and negative correlation, the correlation coefficient from −1 to +1, why correlation does not prove causation, lines of best fit, predicting and extrapolating sales and the dangers of extrapolation, and interpreting index numbers against a base year.

Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is correlation?
Model answer
Correlation is the extent to which two variables move together.
- 2
Distinguish between positive and negative correlation.
Model answer
In positive correlation the two variables move in the same direction, while in negative correlation one rises as the other falls.
- 3
What range of values can a correlation coefficient take?
Model answer
From −1 to +1, where −1 is perfect negative correlation, 0 is no correlation and +1 is perfect positive correlation.
- 4
A correlation coefficient of 0.85 is found between advertising spend and sales. How should this be interpreted?
Model answer
There is a strong positive relationship, so higher advertising spend is generally associated with higher sales.
- 5
Why does correlation not prove causation?
Model answer
Two variables can move together because a third factor drives both of them, or by coincidence, so a relationship in the data is not evidence that one causes the other.
- 6
What is a line of best fit?
Model answer
A line of best fit is a straight line drawn through the points on a scatter graph to represent the general relationship between the two variables.
