Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why do the objectives of different stakeholder groups conflict?

    Model answer

A business's resources are finite, so meeting one group's objective, such as higher wages, reduces what is available to meet another's, such as dividends.

  2. 2

Give an example of conflict between shareholders and employees.

    Model answer

Shareholders want costs cut to raise profit while employees want higher pay and secure jobs, so a cost-cutting programme satisfies one group at the expense of the other.

  3. 3

How can the objectives of customers and shareholders conflict?

    Model answer

Customers want low prices and high quality, but raising the price or cutting the quality improves the margin shareholders want and leaves customers worse off.

  4. 4

How can a supplier's objectives conflict with those of the business buying from it?

    Model answer

The buyer wants lower input prices and longer credit, while the supplier wants a higher price and prompt payment, so squeezing terms damages the supplier's cash flow.

  5. 5

Why might the local community and shareholders disagree over an expansion?

    Model answer

Expansion raises output and profit for shareholders, but brings extra traffic, noise and building on open land for residents.

  6. 6

How can a conflict between stakeholders turn out to be only a matter of timing?

    Model answer

Investment in training or new equipment depresses this year's profit and raises future returns, so the same shareholder can object now and benefit later.
