Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a franchise?

    Model answer

A franchise is an agreement in which one business licenses another to trade under its name and proven business format, in return for an initial fee and a continuing share of the revenue.

  2. 2

Distinguish between a franchisor and a franchisee.

    Model answer

The franchisor owns the brand and the business format and sells the right to use it, while the franchisee pays for that right and runs an outlet as their own business.

  3. 3

Name the two main payments a franchisee makes to the franchisor.

    Model answer

The two are an initial franchise fee paid to join the network, and an ongoing royalty calculated as a percentage of the outlet's turnover.

  4. 4

What does a franchisee receive in return for the initial fee?

    Model answer

They receive the right to use the brand, a proven operating system with training and manuals, help in finding and fitting out a site, and the benefit of national marketing.

  5. 5

State three freedoms a franchisee gives up compared with an independent trader.

    Model answer

They cannot choose their own suppliers, they cannot change the product range or prices as they wish, and they cannot alter the appearance or branding of the outlet.

  6. 6

Why is the failure rate among franchised outlets lower than among independent start-ups?

    Model answer

The format has already been proven in other locations, and the franchisee begins with training, a recognised brand and an established supply chain rather than building all three from nothing.
