PERT and the limits of project planning

  • 2 things to know
  • Components 01, 02 and 03

Overview

Recall questions on PERT, its optimistic, pessimistic and most likely times, the expected time it produces, and what project planning cannot allow for.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

Key term

Once an expected time has been calculated for every activity in a PERT network, how is the critical path identified?

Key term

In PERT, what is the optimistic time?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is PERT?

    Model answer

A project planning technique that combines three time estimates for each activity into a single expected duration, so that uncertainty in the estimates is allowed for.

  2. 2

In PERT, what is the optimistic time?

    Model answer

The shortest time an activity could take if everything went as well as it realistically could.

  3. 3

In PERT, what is the pessimistic time?

    Model answer

The longest an activity would take if the foreseeable problems all occurred.

  4. 4

In PERT, what is the most likely time?

    Model answer

The duration the activity would take under normal conditions, and the estimate that would be used if only one figure were available.

  5. 5

State the formula PERT uses to calculate the expected time of an activity.

    Model answer

    Expected time = (optimistic time + 4 × most likely time + pessimistic time) ÷ 6.

  6. 6

An activity has an optimistic time of 4 days, a most likely time of 6 days and a pessimistic time of 14 days. Calculate its expected time.

    Model answer

    Expected time = (4 + 24 + 14) ÷ 6 = 42 ÷ 6 = 7 days.
