Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by sustainability?
Model answer
Sustainability means meeting present needs without reducing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
- 2
What is the triple bottom line?
Model answer
The triple bottom line judges a business on its social and environmental performance as well as its profit, often summarised as people, planet and profit.
- 3
Distinguish between renewable and non-renewable resources, with a business example of each.
Model answer
Renewable resources replenish themselves, such as timber from a managed forest, whereas non-renewable resources such as crude oil are finite, so a business relying on them faces rising prices and eventual scarcity.
- 4
What is meant by a circular economy?
Model answer
A circular economy keeps products and materials in use through repair, reuse, remanufacture and recycling, instead of making, using and discarding them.
- 5
Give two ways a business can design a product to be more sustainable.
Model answer
It can make the product durable and repairable rather than disposable, and it can use recycled materials and less of them per unit.
- 6
How can a business make its supply chain more sustainable?
Model answer
It can source from certified or local suppliers, set environmental standards into its contracts and audit them, consolidate deliveries, and cut the packaging used in transit.
