What does a host country gain when a multinational invests there?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a multinational corporation?
Model answer
A multinational corporation is a business with production or operating facilities in more than one country, usually controlled from a headquarters in its home country.
- 2
Explain two reasons a business chooses to become a multinational.
Model answer
Producing abroad gives it access to customers in growing overseas markets, and it can lower costs by using cheaper labour, land or materials than are available at home.
- 3
How do multinationals themselves drive globalisation forward?
Model answer
They move capital, technology and management practice across borders, build supply chains that span continents, and spread the same brands and standards into every market they enter.
- 4
What does a host country gain when a multinational invests there?
Model answer
Jobs and training for local workers, and tax revenue plus orders for local suppliers.
- 5
What criticisms are made of multinationals operating in developing countries?
Model answer
Profits are largely sent back to the home country rather than reinvested locally, and pay and working conditions may be poor because local law is weak or poorly enforced.
- 6
Distinguish between globalisation and a global strategy.
Model answer
Globalisation is a process happening to the world economy as a whole, whereas a global strategy is a deliberate plan by one business to operate across many countries, usually with a common product and brand.
