- 1
In the marketing mix, what is meant by place?
Model answer
Place means how and where the product is made available to the customer, covering the channels used and the logistics that get it there.
- 2
What is a channel of distribution?
Model answer
A channel of distribution is the route a product takes from producer to final consumer, including any intermediaries along the way.
- 3
Describe the direct channel of distribution.
Model answer
In the direct channel the producer sells straight to the consumer with no intermediary, for example through its own website or shop.
- 4
Give two advantages of selling directly to the consumer.
Model answer
The producer keeps the margin an intermediary would take, and it owns the customer relationship and the data that comes with it.
- 5
What role does a wholesaler play in a distribution channel?
Model answer
A wholesaler buys in bulk from producers and breaks the quantity down for many small retailers, which cuts the number of transactions each side has to handle.
- 6
Why does a producer accept a lower price per unit when selling through a retailer?
Model answer
The retailer provides shelf space, reach and payment collection that the producer would otherwise have to fund and manage itself.
