Presenting, analysing and explaining fieldwork data

  • 3 things to know
  • Component 03

Overview

Processing raw readings, matching a presentation method to the data, scatter graphs, choropleth maps, proportional symbols and flow lines, land use maps, analysing results, the difference between describing and explaining, treating anomalies, and using a case study to explain results.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What does processing raw readings mean, and why is it done before presentation?

    Model answer

Working out means, totals, ranges or percentages from the readings, so that sites with different numbers of measurements can be compared fairly.

  2. 2

What decides which presentation method suits a set of data?

    Model answer

The kind of data it is: totals in separate categories suit a bar chart, change over time suits a line graph, proportions of a whole suit a pie chart, two measured variables suit a scatter graph, and anything tied to place suits a map.

  3. 3

When is a scatter graph the right way to show fieldwork results?

    Model answer

When testing whether two measured variables are related, such as channel width against distance downstream, because a line of best fit shows the direction and strength of the trend.

  4. 4

What is a choropleth map, and what is it good for?

    Model answer

A map with each area shaded according to its value, darker for higher, so regional differences such as deprivation or population density can be seen at a glance.

  5. 5

What is the advantage of proportional symbols or flow lines on a base map?

    Model answer

The symbol sits at the place the reading came from and its size shows the value, so the pattern and its location are shown together.

  6. 6

How is a land use survey recorded on a map?

    Model answer

Each building or site is given a category such as retail, residential, industrial or open space, and the categories are shaded onto a base map to show land use zones.
