Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What was meant by propaganda by the deed?
Model answer
It was the nineteenth-century tactic of dramatic acts, including assassinations of rulers, intended to inspire the masses by demonstrating that the powerful could be struck at.
- 2
How do anarchists answer the charge that a stateless society would collapse into chaos?
Model answer
They reply that the disorder people fear is itself produced by the inequality and repression the state creates, and that voluntary co-operation already governs most of daily life.
- 3
Why do anarchists reject representative democracy as well as dictatorship?
Model answer
Because a majority vote still imposes the will of some people upon others, so representation replaces genuine self-government with a milder and better disguised form of rule.
- 4
Why do collectivist anarchists regard capitalism as a form of coercion?
Model answer
They see wage labour, private ownership of productive resources and the pursuit of profit as economic domination which mirrors the political domination exercised by the state.
- 5
Anarchism has been called the meeting point of extreme liberalism and extreme socialism. Explain this description.
Model answer
Individualist anarchism pushes liberal individual sovereignty to the point where the state disappears, while collectivist anarchism pushes socialist common ownership to the point where the state becomes unnecessary.
- 6
Why is it disputed whether anarchism is a single coherent ideology?
Model answer
Its two traditions begin from opposite views of human nature and property and agree only on rejecting the state, so critics see a shared negative slogan rather than one doctrine.
