Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is direct democracy?
Model answer
Direct democracy is a system in which citizens decide policy questions themselves rather than leaving them to elected representatives.
- 2
Why does direct democracy exist only at state and local level in the USA?
Model answer
The Constitution makes no provision for a national vote on policy, so these devices exist only where state constitutions create them.
- 3
Define an initiative.
Model answer
An initiative is a process by which citizens who collect enough signatures can place a proposed law or constitutional amendment directly before the voters.
- 4
Distinguish between a direct and an indirect initiative.
Model answer
A direct initiative goes straight onto the ballot once signatures are verified, whereas an indirect one goes first to the state legislature, which may act before the voters are asked.
- 5
What is a proposition?
Model answer
A proposition is the measure as it appears on the ballot paper for voters to approve or reject.
- 6
What is a referendum at state level?
Model answer
A referendum is a vote in which the electorate approves or rejects a measure referred to it, either because the state constitution requires it or because a petition has forced it.
