Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is negative freedom in Berlin's account?
Model answer
Negative freedom is the absence of external constraint: a person is free to the extent that no one else prevents them from acting as they choose.
- 2
What is positive freedom in Berlin's account?
Model answer
Positive freedom is self-mastery, being one's own master and able to realise one's true purposes, rather than merely being left alone.
- 3
Why did Berlin regard positive freedom as dangerous?
Model answer
Because if someone else claims to know a person's real self or true interests, coercion can be presented as liberation, opening a path to authoritarian rule.
- 4
Define value pluralism.
Model answer
Value pluralism is Berlin's view that there are many genuine human values which are equally valid yet sometimes conflict, so they cannot all be realised together.
- 5
How does Berlin's value pluralism differ from relativism?
Model answer
Pluralism holds that the competing values are objectively real and can be understood across cultures, whereas relativism denies that any value can be judged beyond its own culture.
- 6
How does Berlin's thought support multiculturalism?
Model answer
If there is no single correct way of life, a society should leave room for different communities to pursue their own conception of the good and should distrust attempts to impose one pattern on all.
