Party Traditions and Organisation
- 4 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
Recall questions on the political traditions of each party, the tension in the Republican claim to Lincoln, and how a US party is organised.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does party membership in the USA differ from party membership in the UK?
Why did the party machines decline?
What is a party platform, and why are US campaigns candidate-centred and the parties broad?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the Democratic Party's political tradition?
Model answer
It is the party of Roosevelt's New Deal and Johnson's Great Society, historically allied to organised labour, and since the 1960s the party of civil rights.
- 2
What is the Republican Party's political tradition?
Model answer
It is the party of Lincoln and the Union, remade after 1980 as the party of Reagan's small-government, low-tax conservatism.
- 3
Why is the Republican claim to be the party of Lincoln in tension with its modern coalition?
Model answer
The party that ended slavery lost African American support after the New Deal and the civil rights era, and now draws its greatest strength from the once solidly Democratic South.
- 4
Describe the organisation of a US political party.
Model answer
It is highly decentralised, consisting of fifty largely autonomous state parties beneath a national committee, with no mass membership and campaigns run by candidates rather than by the party.
- 5
What do the Democratic and Republican National Committees actually do?
Model answer
They organise the national convention, raise and distribute money, run data and voter contact operations and support candidates, but they cannot choose those candidates or bind them to policy.
- 6
Define a party platform.
Model answer
A party platform is the statement of policy adopted at the national convention, and it carries no binding force over candidates or officeholders.
