Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What was the Reform Party?
Model answer
The Reform Party was the vehicle built around Ross Perot in the 1990s, campaigning chiefly on the federal deficit, trade and political reform.
- 2
How well did Ross Perot do in 1992, and what did he win?
Model answer
He took around nineteen per cent of the national popular vote and won no electoral college votes at all.
- 3
What does Perot's 1992 result demonstrate?
Model answer
It shows that even a fifth of the national vote is worthless if it is spread evenly, so the barrier facing third parties is the electoral system rather than a lack of support.
- 4
What is the spoiler role, and give an example.
Model answer
It is the ability of a minor candidate to change which major candidate wins by drawing votes from the closer of the two, as Ralph Nader is widely argued to have done in Florida in 2000.
- 5
Who was the last third-party candidate to win electoral college votes?
Model answer
George Wallace in 1968, who carried five southern states and took forty-six electoral votes.
- 6
State the functions third parties perform despite rarely winning.
Model answer
They raise issues the main parties are ignoring, offer a vehicle for protest, and act as a safety valve for discontent that might otherwise leave the system altogether.
