Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why must the Court of Justice of the European Union not be confused with the European Court of Human Rights?
Model answer
The Court of Justice is an EU institution applying EU law, while the European Court of Human Rights belongs to the Council of Europe and applies the European Convention on Human Rights, which the UK remains party to after leaving the EU.
- 2
State four aims of the European Union.
Model answer
To secure peace between European states, to create a single market with free movement of goods, services, capital and people, to promote economic convergence and prosperity, and to develop ever closer political union.
- 3
What are the four freedoms of the single market?
Model answer
The free movement of goods, services, capital and people between member states.
- 4
To what extent has the EU achieved its aim of securing peace?
Model answer
Very largely within its membership, since former enemies have been bound together by economic integration for decades, though the Union has struggled to project military or diplomatic power beyond its borders.
- 5
How successful has the single market been?
Model answer
It is the deepest example of economic integration between sovereign states and has removed most barriers to trade in goods, but integration in services remains incomplete and non-tariff barriers persist.
- 6
What did the eurozone crisis reveal about monetary union?
Model answer
It showed that a shared currency without a shared fiscal policy leaves weaker economies unable to devalue, so adjustment falls on austerity and unemployment instead.
