Rand and Nozick
- 3 things to know
- Paper 3
Overview
Recall questions on Rand's objectivism, egoism and opposition to collectivism, and on Nozick's minimal state, entitlement theory of justice and objection to redistributive taxation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What rights did Rand recognise?
Why did Nozick object to redistributive taxation?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Outline Rand's philosophy of objectivism.
Model answer
It holds that reality is objective, that reason is the only means of knowledge, that the moral purpose of life is one's own happiness, and that laissez-faire capitalism is the only just social system.
- 2
Explain Rand's rational and ethical egoism.
Model answer
Each person should pursue their own rational self-interest as a moral duty, since sacrificing oneself for others denies the value of one's own life.
- 3
Why did Rand oppose collectivism and statism?
Model answer
Because they subordinate the individual to the group and licence the state to seize the products of a person's mind and labour, which she regarded as a form of servitude.
- 4
What rights did Rand recognise?
Model answer
Only negative rights to life, liberty, property and the pursuit of happiness; she denied any right to be provided with goods or services at another's expense.
- 5
What functions did Nozick allow the state?
Model answer
Protection against force, theft and fraud, and the enforcement of contracts; any state doing more than this violates individual rights.
- 6
Explain Nozick's entitlement theory of justice.
Model answer
A distribution is just if holdings were justly acquired in the first place and justly transferred thereafter, with rectification where they were not; justice is about how holdings arose, not what pattern they form.
