Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by a party system?
Model answer
A party system is the pattern of relationships and competition between the parties that hold or realistically contest power within a state.
- 2
Describe a two-party system.
Model answer
It is a system in which two parties dominate, alternate in office, and between them win the overwhelming majority of votes and seats, so that government is normally formed by one of them alone.
- 3
Describe a multi-party system.
Model answer
It is a system in which several parties win significant representation and none can normally govern alone, so government is usually by coalition or as a minority.
- 4
What is a dominant-party system?
Model answer
It is a system with genuine competition but in which one party wins repeatedly over a long period, so alternation in power effectively ceases.
- 5
Define a minor party.
Model answer
A minor party is one that wins some support and may hold seats but has no realistic prospect of forming a government on its own.
- 6
Give evidence that Westminster remains a two-party system.
Model answer
Every government since 1945 has been led by either the Conservatives or Labour, and one of the two almost always emerges with an overall majority.
