Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How much influence do minor parties have on the political agenda in each country?

    Model answer

In both the UK and the USA minor parties raise issues such as environmental policy or immigration that the major parties later adopt, but only UK minor parties can press the point by holding seats.

  2. 2

Why does the whole UK party spectrum sit to the left of the American one on the role of the state?

    Model answer

Even the main UK party of the right supports a tax-funded national health service and a substantial welfare state, which no major US party proposes.

  3. 3

How central are social and moral issues to party competition in each country?

    Model answer

Abortion, religion and gun ownership divide the US parties sharply, while in the UK these questions are much less central and are often decided by free votes rather than party policy.

  4. 4

Compare the economic policies of the two main parties of the right.

    Model answer

Both the Conservatives and the Republicans favour lower taxes, deregulation and business, but the Republicans go considerably further in opposing welfare spending and public provision.

  5. 5

How closely do the Democrats resemble the Labour Party?

    Model answer

Both are broad centre-left coalitions, but the Democrats accept a much smaller welfare state and have no formal institutional link with trade unions of the kind Labour retains.

  6. 6

How would a cultural approach explain the narrower policy range of US parties?

    Model answer

American individualism and long-standing suspicion of federal power keep both parties committed to limited government, while British acceptance of collective provision shifts the whole spectrum leftwards.
