What Movement Analysis covers
Movement Analysis is examined in Component 1, Fitness and Body Systems. It covers first, second and third class levers, mechanical advantage and disadvantage and Planes and axes of movement.
Where it is assessed
Component 1
Fitness and Body Systems, a 1 hour 30 minute paper worth 36% of the GCSE.

Each one has its own page.
- First, second and third class leversThe parts of a lever, how first, second and third class levers are arranged, sporting examples at the neck, elbow, ankle, knee and hip, and the F-L-E memory aid.Open →
- Mechanical advantage and disadvantageThe effort arm and load arm, mechanical advantage and disadvantage with worked calculations, and what each lever class gives up and gains.Open →
- Planes and axes of movementThe sagittal, frontal and transverse planes, the frontal, sagittal and vertical axes, and the planes and axes of somersaults, cartwheels, twists, discus spins and running.Open →
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.

Commonly confused

Second class lever vs Third class lever
Second class lever: an arrangement with the load between the fulcrum and the effort. Third class lever: an arrangement with the effort between the fulcrum and the load.
Mechanical advantage vs Mechanical disadvantage
Mechanical advantage: an effort arm longer than the load arm, so little force moves a heavy load. Mechanical disadvantage: a load arm longer than the effort arm, so great force is needed.
Effort arm vs Load arm
Effort arm: the distance from the fulcrum to where the muscle pulls. Load arm: the distance from the fulcrum to the weight being moved.
Questions from this topic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a lever?
Model answer
A lever is a rigid bar that turns about a fixed point. The bones act as the levers in the body.
- 2
Name the three parts of a lever.
Model answer
A lever has a fulcrum, an effort and a load.
- 3
In the body's lever systems, what acts as the fulcrum, the effort and the load?
Model answer
The joint is the fulcrum and the muscle provides the effort. The load is the weight of the body part and anything it is moving.
- 4
How is a first class lever arranged?
Model answer
A first class lever has the fulcrum between the effort and the load.
- 5
Give a sporting example of a first class lever at the neck.
Model answer
A first class lever operates at the neck as a footballer tilts the head back before heading the ball. The top of the spine is the fulcrum, with the neck muscles behind it and the head in front.
- 6
How does the elbow act as a first class lever?
Model answer
The elbow is a first class lever when it extends, as in the release of a javelin. The triceps pulls behind the joint and the load is in the hand beyond it.

Movement Analysis revision questions
- What does Movement Analysis cover in Edexcel GCSE Physical Education?
- 3 subtopics: first, second and third class levers, mechanical advantage and disadvantage and planes and axes of movement. Each one has its own page with questions and model answers.
- How is Movement Analysis organised?
- By the Edexcel 1PE0 specification, subtopic by subtopic, so it matches the order you are taught it in.
