Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How is the Cooper 12-minute run test carried out, and what does it measure?

    Model answer

The performer runs as far as possible around a measured track in 12 minutes. The distance covered measures cardiovascular fitness.

  2. 2

How is the Cooper 12-minute swim test carried out?

    Model answer

The performer swims as far as possible in a pool in 12 minutes. The distance in metres gives a measure of cardiovascular fitness.

  3. 3

Describe the protocol of the Harvard Step Test.

    Model answer

The performer steps on and off a bench about 45 cm high for five minutes. A metronome keeps the rate at 30 steps per minute. The pulse is then counted three times during recovery.

  4. 4

Why does a fast recovery of heart rate give a good score on the Harvard Step Test?

    Model answer

A fit heart returns towards its resting rate quickly after exercise. Lower pulse counts during recovery give a higher fitness index.

  5. 5

A Harvard Step Test fitness index is 100 × the test time in seconds ÷ (2 × the total of the three pulse counts). A student steps for 300 seconds and counts 95, 85 and 70 beats. What is the fitness index?

    Model answer

    The fitness index is 60. The pulse counts total 250, and 100 × 300 ÷ (2 × 250) = 60.

  6. 6

Describe the Illinois agility run test.

    Model answer

The performer starts lying face down and sprints round a cone course 10 m long and 5 m wide. The course includes weaving through four cones down the middle. The time taken measures agility.
