Principles of training
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Individual needs, specificity, progressive overload, FITT, overtraining and reversibility, and the aerobic and anaerobic training zones with worked calculations.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is meant by the principle of individual needs?
What is specificity in training?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by the principle of individual needs?
Model answer
A training programme should be matched to the person doing it. The plan should suit their goals, current fitness, age and any injuries.
- 2
What is specificity in training?
Model answer
Specificity means matching training to the demands of the activity. Training should use the same movements, muscles and energy systems as the sport.
- 3
How would a 100 m swimmer apply the principle of specificity?
Model answer
The swimmer should do most training in the pool at sprint pace. Short and intense swims develop the speed and power the race needs.
- 4
What is progressive overload?
Model answer
Progressive overload means gradually increasing training so the body works harder than normal. Fitness then improves without the injury risk of a sudden jump in workload.
- 5
How could a runner apply progressive overload over six weeks?
Model answer
The runner could add a few minutes to each run every week. Another option is to raise the pace gradually as fitness improves.
- 6
What does FITT stand for?
Model answer
FITT stands for frequency, intensity, time and type. A coach can adjust any of the four to overload the body.
