Electrical power and energy
- 3 things to know
- Papers 1 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on the three power equations and where they come from, which resistor dissipates more in series and in parallel, and why transmission uses high voltage.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Two resistors of different values are connected in parallel across a supply. Which one dissipates more power, and why?
Why is electrical energy sent long distances at very high potential difference and low current?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How is the equation P = V²/R obtained from P = VI?
Model answer
Substituting I = V/R into P = VI gives P = V(V/R) = V²/R.
- 2
State the equation for the electrical energy transferred in a component in a time t:
Model answer
W = VIt, where V is the potential difference across the component and I is the current in it.
- 3
Two resistors of different values are connected in series. Which one dissipates more power, and why?
Model answer
The larger resistor, because the current is the same in both and P = I²R, so the power is proportional to resistance.
- 4
Two resistors of different values are connected in parallel across a supply. Which one dissipates more power, and why?
Model answer
The smaller resistor, because the potential difference across both is the same and P = V²/R, so the power is inversely proportional to resistance.
- 5
An electric heater rated at 2.0 kW operates from a 230 V mains supply. What current does it draw?
Model answer
I = P/V = 2000/230 = 8.7 A.
- 6
A 60 W lamp is switched on for 5.0 minutes. How much electrical energy does it transfer?
Model answer
W = Pt = 60 × 300 = 1.8 × 10⁴ J.
