- 1 thing to know
- Papers 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on what a wavefront is, how wavefronts relate to wavelength, the principle of superposition, and what it means for oscillations to be in phase.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a wavefront?
Model answer
A wavefront is a line or surface joining all the points of a wave that are oscillating in phase, such as all the points along one crest.
- 2
How are successive wavefronts related to the wavelength, and how do they lie relative to the direction of travel?
Model answer
Successive wavefronts are one wavelength apart and each is perpendicular to the direction in which the wave is travelling.
- 3
What happens to the shape of the wavefronts from a point source at a large distance from it?
Model answer
The curvature becomes negligible over a small region, so the wavefronts are effectively plane.
- 4
What does the principle of superposition state?
Model answer
When two or more waves meet at a point, the resultant displacement at that point is the vector sum of the individual displacements.
- 5
What is meant by the phase of an oscillation?
Model answer
The phase describes the point an oscillator has reached in its cycle, expressed as an angle in degrees or radians.
- 6
What does it mean to say that two oscillations are in phase?
Model answer
Their phase difference is zero, or a whole number of complete cycles, so they reach their maximum positive displacement at the same instant.
