Grating spectra and measuring wavelength

  • 1 thing to know
  • Papers 2 and 3

Overview

Recall questions on why grating maxima are sharper than double-slit fringes, the white-light spectrum and how it differs from a prism's, and the laser experiment.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

How does the order of the colours in a grating spectrum compare with that produced by a prism?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is seen when white light is passed through a diffraction grating?

    Model answer

The zero-order maximum straight ahead is white, and on either side there are continuous spectra in which violet is diffracted least and red is diffracted most.

  2. 2

How does the order of the colours in a grating spectrum compare with that produced by a prism?

    Model answer

A grating deviates red light the most because it has the longest wavelength, whereas a prism deviates red the least and violet the most.

  3. 3

How can the wavelength of light from a laser be found using a diffraction grating?

    Model answer

Direct the beam normally at a grating of known slit spacing, measure the perpendicular distance to a screen and the distance of a given order from the central maximum, find θ from the tangent of these distances, then calculate λ from λ = d sinθ / n.

  4. 4

Why does using a grating with more lines per millimetre improve the determination of wavelength?

    Model answer

A smaller slit spacing diffracts each order through a larger angle, so the distances measured are greater and their percentage uncertainty is smaller.

  5. 5

What two safety precautions are needed when using a laser with a diffraction grating?

    Model answer

Never look along the beam or its reflection, and remove reflective objects from the bench while displaying a warning sign at the entrance to the laboratory.

  6. 6

A grating with 500 lines per mm gives a second-order maximum at 36.1°. What is the wavelength of the light?

    Model answer

    With d = 2.00 × 10⁻⁶ m, λ = d sinθ / n = 2.00 × 10⁻⁶ × 0.589 ÷ 2 = 5.89 × 10⁻⁷ m, or 589 nm.
