Refraction, wave speed and the critical angle
- 1 thing to know
- Papers 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on the refraction relationship, which way a ray bends and why, the speed and wavelength in the medium, and the definition of the critical angle.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which way does a ray bend when it enters a more optically dense medium, and why?
Model answer
It bends towards the normal, because the light slows down in the denser medium.
- 2
In terms of wave behaviour, why does a ray change direction on entering a new medium?
Model answer
The frequency is fixed but the speed changes, so the wavelength changes; when one side of a wavefront enters first it is slowed before the other, swinging the wavefront and hence the ray round.
- 3
A ray in air meets a glass block of refractive index 1.50 at 30° to the normal. What is the angle of refraction?
Model answer
sin θ₂ = sin 30°/1.50 = 0.333, so the angle of refraction is 19.5°.
- 4
What is the speed of light in a glass of refractive index 1.50?
Model answer
The speed is v = c/n = 3.00 × 10⁸ / 1.50 = 2.00 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹.
- 5
Light of wavelength 600 nm in air enters glass of refractive index 1.50. What is its wavelength inside the glass?
Model answer
The frequency is unchanged and the speed falls by a factor of 1.50, so the wavelength becomes 600/1.50 = 400 nm.
- 6
Does the frequency of light change when it is refracted?
Model answer
No, the frequency is set by the source and stays the same; only the speed and the wavelength change.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Waves and Particle Nature of Light, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
