Intensity, the inverse square law and refractive index
- 2 things to know
- Papers 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on the definition and unit of intensity, why it falls as an inverse square, how it depends on amplitude, and the definition of refractive index.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does the intensity of a wave depend on its amplitude?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by the intensity of radiation?
Model answer
Intensity is the radiant power incident per unit area on a surface at right angles to the radiation.
- 2
State the equation for intensity and give its unit:
Model answer
Intensity is I = P/A, where P is the radiant power and A the area, measured in W m⁻².
- 3
Why does the intensity from a point source fall off as the inverse square of the distance?
Model answer
The power spreads over the surface of a sphere of area 4πr², so at distance r the intensity is P/4πr², which is proportional to 1/r².
- 4
The distance from a small lamp is trebled. What happens to the intensity of the light received?
Model answer
The intensity falls to one ninth of its original value.
- 5
A 60 W lamp radiates uniformly in all directions. What is the intensity of its radiation 2.0 m away?
Model answer
The area is 4π × 2.0² = 50.3 m², so the intensity is 60/50.3 = 1.2 W m⁻².
- 6
How does the intensity of a wave depend on its amplitude?
Model answer
The intensity is proportional to the square of the amplitude.
