The Doppler effect and redshift
- 2 things to know
- Papers 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on the Doppler effect, the definition of redshift and the equations for it, when z ≈ v/c holds, and what a blueshift would mean.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does it mean if a galaxy shows a blueshift instead?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the Doppler effect?
Model answer
It is the change in the observed frequency and wavelength of a wave caused by relative motion between the source and the observer.
- 2
Why is the observed frequency higher when a source of waves approaches an observer?
Model answer
Each successive wavefront is emitted from a position closer to the observer, so the wavefronts are bunched together, shortening the wavelength and raising the frequency.
- 3
What happens to the observed wavelength and frequency when a source of waves moves away?
Model answer
The wavefronts are stretched apart, so the observed wavelength increases and the observed frequency falls.
- 4
For light, does it matter whether it is the source or the observer that is moving?
Model answer
No, only the relative velocity of source and observer along the line of sight affects the shift.
- 5
What is meant by the redshift of a star or galaxy?
Model answer
It is the fractional increase in the wavelength of its light caused by the object receding from us.
- 6
State the equations used for redshift:
Model answer
The equations are z = Δλ/λ ≈ Δf/f ≈ v/c.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Space, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
