Working as a Physicist
Peer review, publication and scientific integrity
- 1 thing to know
- Papers 1, 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on what a peer reviewer checks, why a method must be reproducible, the two forms of misconduct, and why funding is declared.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is peer review?
Model answer
It is the evaluation of a scientist's work by other independent experts in the same field before that work is published.
- 2
What three things does a peer reviewer check in work submitted for publication?
Model answer
Whether the method is valid, whether the data genuinely support the conclusions drawn, and whether the work is original and properly credits earlier research.
- 3
How does peer review help to protect the integrity of science?
Model answer
It filters out work with flawed methods, unsupported claims or fabricated data before that work enters the accepted body of knowledge.
- 4
Why is publication in a peer-reviewed journal not the final step in validating a new result?
Model answer
The result must also be reproduced independently by other research groups before the scientific community accepts it.
- 5
Why must a published method be described in enough detail to be followed exactly?
Model answer
Other scientists have to be able to repeat the experiment to check whether they obtain the same result.
- 6
Why are conferences and preprints still valuable even though the work presented has not been fully reviewed?
Model answer
They allow results and criticism to circulate quickly, although the findings must be treated as provisional until they are reviewed and reproduced.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Working as a Physicist, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
