Efficiency and wasted energy
- 2 things to know
- Papers 1 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on efficiency from energies and from powers, why it has no unit, why it can never reach 100%, and the joules in a kilowatt-hour.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the difference between the power rating of an appliance and the energy it consumes?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the equation for efficiency in terms of energy:
Model answer
Efficiency = useful energy output ÷ total energy input.
- 2
State the equation for efficiency in terms of power:
Model answer
Efficiency = useful power output ÷ total power input.
- 3
When is it more convenient to calculate efficiency from powers than from energies?
Model answer
When the quantities are given as rates, since the time interval is the same for input and output and cancels out.
- 4
Why does efficiency have no unit?
Model answer
It is the ratio of two quantities of the same kind, so the units cancel and it is a pure number, often expressed as a percentage.
- 5
Why can the efficiency of a real device never reach 100%?
Model answer
Some energy is always dissipated to the surroundings, usually as internal energy through friction and electrical resistance, so the useful output is always less than the input.
- 6
Why would a claimed efficiency greater than 100% be impossible?
Model answer
It would mean the device delivered more energy than it received, which contradicts the principle of conservation of energy.
Other ways to work this

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Mechanics, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
