Electron diffraction and the de Broglie equation
- 1 thing to know
- Papers 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on the electron diffraction arrangement, why rings rather than spots are seen, and the de Broglie equation with the Planck constant.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What arrangement is used to demonstrate electron diffraction?
Model answer
Electrons are accelerated through a high potential difference and fired at a very thin film of polycrystalline graphite, and the electrons that emerge strike a fluorescent screen.
- 2
What pattern is seen on the screen in an electron diffraction experiment?
Model answer
A series of concentric bright and dark rings appears around a central bright spot.
- 3
Why is graphite a suitable material to diffract electrons?
Model answer
The spacing between its layers of atoms is around 10⁻¹⁰ m, which is comparable to the de Broglie wavelength of the electrons, so diffraction is significant.
- 4
Why are rings observed rather than separate spots?
Model answer
The graphite is made up of very many tiny crystals oriented at random, so the diffracted electrons emerge at the same angles in every direction around the beam.
- 5
State the de Broglie equation and define its symbols:
Model answer
The equation is λ = h/p, where λ is the de Broglie wavelength, h is the Planck constant and p is the momentum of the particle.
- 6
What are the value and unit of the Planck constant?
Model answer
The Planck constant is 6.63 × 10⁻³⁴ J s.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Waves and Particle Nature of Light, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
